Why I write

It’s the little things that can shape how a life is lived, or how it moves forward from that point onwards. When I was around nine years old, I was already similar to the way I am, obsessed with new knowledge, constantly reading, looking for more that I could consume in my mind. I may have had friends but I spent a lot of time with my nose buried between whatever pages I had latched on. At nine, I realised that I wanted to write. I could use all those little facts to shape the world. I’d write short little books about heroes and heroines that used their power for good. People who fought and struggled to make the world right. I wanted to help in making the world right.

It wasn’t until I was around twelve that I decided I wanted to be a journalist. Although I had always had a fascination, not only words but also the stories that the human mind can construct. But the world needed something better. The world needed to be influenced by real things in the world. People were and still are in denial about what is going on around us.

So what the world needs is to have its eyes opened. As a singular voice, I knew that I would not have a great impact as I did not desire to be in any position of power. I wanted to use the written word to spread my message. I am not arrogant enough to believe that this truth can be shared solely by one person alone but an inferno is started by one simple blaze and I intended and still intend to be the match that lights the wildfire of change. And if the change has already begun then I will contribute in a way that adds fuel to the pyre.

As I grow older, I have seen the world begin to take a step in the right direction when it comes to meaningful and impactful change, though many are still resistant. Old prejudices and beliefs have tripped us up and brought things to a kind of standstill. Although our younger generations are growing wiser, bolder and more independent in the way they think, there are many who still learn and adhere to the way things used to be.

Though meaningful change is happening, it is only at a snail’s pace. Those in positions of power, who should be adaptable and open-minded, still follow old views that make this world a little darker. Many people have spoken out against this and although things are changing, it just doesn’t seem as if it is enough to make the world a better place. I want to be a part of the change that is currently happening, I want to be a part of that change for the rest of my life, I want to support it by showing the world the truth that will spark the change that this world needs to see.

So when I say I want to be a journalist, I mean that I want to use my words to change things and to support those who can change things for the better. I want to give the world the facts that it needs to start to fight for itself. If even one word I write can change someone’s opinion or their mind then I will have been successful.

Thank you for writing this, in all honesty it is very inspiring!
I sometimes wish i had this amount of passion to create, however i know that instead of documenting history i want to get involved in it.
Don’t ever stop writing, we need more honest people in the industry! 🙂

I don’t usually comment on the Internet, but this time I felt like I needed to.

I just stumbled across this article in a time where I was struggling with self confidence in my career path. I too have a passion for writing and hope to someday be able to reveal my works to the world, even though I know that not many would be interested in my poetry scraps.

But reading this single piece of writing really inspired me to not give up, and for that I really thank you! It really opened my eyes again on the fact that I don’t want to do this for anyone else, but for myself more than anything.

I wish you the best of luck in “fanning that spark into a flame” (in the words of Hamilton the musical, off track, but the inferno bit really reminded me of this beautiful musical ).

I hope many others have the same mindset as you, and find the courage to speak up and report true issues in an honest way, not just measly celebrity gossip, but what is actually important for this generation and others to come to hear.

You have a beautiful way of stringing words together, and seem very well spoken but level headed, which are really important traits to have in a profession such as journalism.

I can’t wait to hear more from you and the issues you like to report!

Thank you again, and please keep going!
